Legendary Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has passed away aged 75. The singer, whose real name was Gaynor Hopkins, was known for hits including “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, “It’s a Heartache” and “Holding out for a Hero”. Her family posted a statement on her Instagram page which said: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.” Last month, her family revealed she had emerged from a coma but remained seriously ill in intensive care, thanking fans for their continued support. The Welsh singer with one of music’s most distinctive voices Born in Skewen, Neath Port Talbot, South Wales, she first rose to prominence in the late 1970s with the hit singles “Lost in France” and “It’s a Heartache”, the latter becoming an international success and establishing her as one of the UK’s leading female artists. Tyler achieved worldwide superstardom in 1983 with “Total Eclipse of the Heart”, written and produced by Jim Steinman. The song topped charts around the world and remains one of the best-selling singles of all time. She followed it with “Holding Out for a Hero”, another enduring classic that has featured in numerous films, television programmes and sporting events.
