Chancey Williams performs at Mount Rushmore

In a moment neo-traditional country artist Chancey Williams calls “the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” he performed at Mount Rushmore on Friday, July 3. The performance aired live on both Fox and C-SPAN. Williams was invited to help kick off the Independence Day weekend gathering at the historic national memorial, bringing his brand of authentic cowboy country to a celebration honouring America’s 250th birthday. The high-profile event also featured remarks from South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden. Despite rain and hail moving through the Black Hills ahead of the event, Williams and his band took the stage for a condensed 45-minute, 12-song set as thousands gathered beneath one of America’s most iconic landmarks. The Wyoming native performed fan favourites including “Rodeo Cold Beer,” “Miles On Me,” “Saddle Up,” “Outlaws” and his signature anthem, “The World Needs More Cowboys.” Then came an unexpected highlight. As Williams performed his gritty, up-tempo track “The Saint,” Air Force One soared overhead, creating a once-in-a-lifetime scene for the artist and crowd below. “I’ve been fortunate to get to do a lot of really neat things in my life, but this was hands down the coolest thing I’ve ever done,” Williams shared following the performance. “To be playing at Mount Rushmore, surrounded by that kind of history and patriotism, and then see Air Force One fly right over us. It’s something I’ll never forget.” Known for bringing his authentic cowboy roots to stages across the country, Williams continues to build a career rooted in hard work, pride of place and a deep appreciation for the people and stories that make up the American West.
