Maverick meets Randy Houser at Country Calling

This past weekend, country music fans came together at Country Calling at King’s Farm in Chelmsford, Essex. The Sunday headliner, Randy Houser, played to a packed out crowd, rounding off an exceptional weekend of music and a celebration of all things country. With hits including “Runnin’ Outta Moonlight”, “Goodnight Kiss”, and “Like a Cowboy”, Randy appeared at the festival as part of a UK tour. Maverick Country was lucky enough to catch up with Randy ahead of his performance. You’ve performed in Glasgow and Manchester this week. How would you say UK audiences differ to US audiences? Well, I will say this: while we were in Glasgow, I noticed that everybody looks at you and sort of sings along, but won’t sing out loud. And then you think, “I think they hate me.”
And then the end of the song comes and they’re like, “WOOOOO!”, so it’s definitely different, you know? And then in Manchester, last night they were a little more vocal, like they would sing along a lot more. They were great.
Well, they were great in Glasgow too, it’s just a different kind of thing. In America, they just want to make noise and throw shit at you and stuff like that. And I’m like, I’m not down for the throwing stuff at me thing. The interesting thing is that UK fans know…like if I want to play a deep cut, like a B side song that not many people have heard, they know it here. It’s insane! So we’re very thankful to have people that actually are there to listen to music as well, not just have their own party. You released your first album in 2008.
How would you say country music has changed since then? It definitely has. About two times I’ve seen it change and circle back around to itself. I think it has definitely went through a more rappy kind of thing. And I feel like now it’s swinging back more country again, which I love and I’m thankful for. I just think that’s what country music does. It always goes back to its roots. Being an actor as well, how do you think being a country music artist translates? What are the differences you have noticed? I mean, it’s easier for me to probably point out the similarities than anything.
I’m not really an actor at all; I can just be me and get the point across of what you want to say, basically. The only thing I can be is uniquely me and say what you want to say.
The first time I was walking to a movie set, felt like every night I walk out on to a stage. I was so scared to go to the first film I did. The first real film was with Martin Scorsese, and I was so nervous to go out there. But as soon as I started walking to the set, the parallel of walking to a stage to go play music happened, and I got pumped up and excited and you overcame those fears. When can we expect new music from you? We have a brand new one out now called “Back in the Bottle”, and we got some more music in the can to release as soon as we decide to.
